Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
